Haile Gebrselassie breaks world record at Berlin Marathon

Haile Gebrselassie broke the marathon world record yesterday, winning the Berlin Marathon in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 26 seconds.
The 34-year-old Ethiopian was 29 seconds faster than the four-year-old mark of 2:04:55 set by Kenya's Paul Tergat, on the German capital's flat and fast course where six world records have been set.

I drank coffee for 2 hours, 4 minutes, 26 seconds yesterday after a one hour run.

Guess we need to start getting serious about our speed work if we want to give Haile a run for his money. BTW - Haile got $71,000 for the win and $71,000 for the world record. Not bad hourly pay.
I must add that Scott Jurek won the Spartathlon this weekend as well.

Geb is unbelievable. He's the King.

He's such a hero! But do you think that's not a lot of money for breaking a World Record like that?

Still much happier for Scott and Karl than for this guy, speed, money, fame and all...and no, ain't going to work on speed, just on cry-baby technique:)

Just an unreal performance. I'm happy for him and for distance running in general.

You know, I think it's possible that Haile might have enjoyed that marathon coffee we had too. I mean, sitting around with wet runners, swilling coffee and eating pastries (thanks to Rick), talking about running, planning runs and laughing uproariously...what's not to like? And, at least you ran for a bit.

Definitely a big weekend for running.

Having not yet sucessfully run a half marathon in 2 hours and 4 minutes, I feel ridiculously slow now :)

Pretty spectacular!

What a fabulous picture, with the Brandenburger Tor in the background. The gate was symbolic for the wall that divided east from west, and us from liberty. It's always cool to see a breakthrough on that spot.

I'm just thinking of all the running gear & running related travel I could buy with $71,000! Way to go for Scott! A couple people at work who had heard of Scott's win asked me about it and I was like "yeah, he rocked" (as if I knew him personally). :)

That picture brings back memories. I was in Berlin during the 2004 marathon. I was in training for my own Twin Cities marathon and went on a training run the day before along the same course. There was a roller-blading marathon that day and the streets were blocked off, so I got to run down Strasse des 17 Juni, with the Victory Column at my back. Later, SD and I were having lunch on Unter den Linden as the mid-packers were running towards the Brandenburg Gate on their way to the finish. It was a great experience!
